Hard work, training, compassion and community pride were on display last weekend at the Pennington County Firefighters Banquet and Awards at High Country Ranch as two of Hill City’s own were presented with awards. Fire chief Craig Comer received the 2015 Pennington County Fire Officer of the Year award, and Jeremy Dalman was honored as Firefighter of the Year for 2015.
Craig Tieszen, South Dakota state senator, was the guest speaker for the evening and members of the Rapid City Professional Firefighter Pipe & Drum Corp and the Rapid City Fire Department Honor Guard were present to add color and music to the program. This annual event is meant to give kudos to men and women involved in serving their communities, often in emergency situations, all through the year.
One of the ways the fire department served Hill City recently was with a drive to place smoke detectors in homes throughout the community. Door hangers were placed earlier in the week explaining the effort to place the free detectors and on Saturday, a group of volunteers from the fire department, the fire department auxiliary, the Red Cross and Hill City residents went back to homes to install the detectors free of charge.
