Jack McBride was born in 1922 in Sturgis, S.D., to Ivan Taylor McBride and Ethel Iona (Patton) McBride.

He attended school in Piedmont, S.D., where the McBride family had been longtime residents. He had a sincere interest in other people and enjoyed meeting and visiting with anyone who passed his way. As he said, “I never met a stranger.”

On Aug. 12, 1950, Jack married Dorothy Ann Grommesh. They had four children: Julie (Tony Rhodes), Rick McBride (Laurie Roubidoux), Mindy (Blair McCaskell) and Doreen (Ray Schultz). They also had numerous grand-and great-grandchildren.

Jack experienced many different vocational areas in his life including odd jobs, farm and ranch labor, school teacher, trucking business, musician and starting in 1955, a career with the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Department in Lemmon, S.D., where he helped develop the recreation area around Shadehill Dam. He transferred to Rapid City, S.D., in 1960, where he worked in forest fire prevention for 12 years until he moved to Pierre, S.D., in 1972 as a district forester and retired in 1978.

He and Dorothy moved back to the Black Hills of South Dakota, again residing on Pass Creek west of Custer, S.D., never to leave the Hills again. Jack worked for Custer County as a planner for the next 10 years, retiring again to spend time on the place they loved in the country. During all this time he was active with numerous organizations, helping wherever he could and knew more people than most ever would.

Jack died April 25, 2016, at Custer Regional Care Center. He was 93.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ed McBride; and niece, Cheryl.
