City plans to pave

For many years, city officials have been talking about repairing sidewalks downtown, but at least one Hill City resident is concerned about streets and wondering why the city is not moving ahead to pave Deegan Drive and its side streets, one of the few areas in town that is still gravel.

“For the last two years I have been coming to you, asking about road paving and you have told me you have a plan. I am wondering what that plan is,” said Leroy Barker during the public comment portion of the city council meeting on Monday night.

Mayor Dave Gray said the city has a plan but no date for it. They have been putting money aside for the last five years, thinking ahead to future street paving.  City Administrator Brett McMacken said, unfortunately, the money accrued in the account was used to repair frost heave on Bishop Mountain Rd. near Tracy Park.

Barker said his road has not had new gravel on it since 2012 and he does not believe the streets in his area have been properly maintained. He would like the city to at least look into what it would cost to just pave the streets without worrying about the curb and gutter.
