Walter Miles Gardner was born May 4, 1933, in Keystone, S.D., to Miles E. and Dorothy M. Gardner. Walter grew up in the Keystone area where he worked various mining jobs before he was employed by Homestake Mining Co., in Lead, S.D.
Later, Walter moved back to Keystone and was employed until his retirement at Continental Lumber Co. in Hill City, S.D.
Walter was an active member at the Keystone Senior Citizen’s Center and at the Keystone United Church of Christ. He will be remembered for his big heart, sense of humor and knowledge of mining and the history of the Keystone area.
Walter Miles Gardner of Keystone died Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was 83 years old.
He is survived by his wife, Mona of Keystone; two sons, Terry Gardner of Rapid City, S.D., and Kenneth Gardner of Reno Valley, Calif.; and sister, Joyce Metz of Keystone.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Aug. 22 at United Church of Christ in Keystone with the Rev. John DeGroff officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at a later time.
A memorial has been established to further ALS research.
